UC Browser is a web browser that is owned by Alibaba Group. The application is very popular in Asia, and in some regions it is even more used than Google Chrome. This applies to fast-growing markets such as India and Indonesia. Initially launched in April 2004 as a J2ME application, for now, it is available on various platforms, including iOS, Android, Microsoft Windows, Tizen, and Bada.

Smooth web browsing

The browser provides users with a smooth experience of web browsing that uses data comprehension technology and cloud acceleration. Moreover, UC Browser loads the content faster than some other browsers. This became possible due to the fact that UC Browser servers act like a proxy that render and compress the data before sending it to users. Besides this, there are a number of other exciting features the browser has:

  • Adblocking: the application automatically detect and block the advertising, you do not need to install the third-party ad-blocking applications;
  • Permanent mini video window: as in YouTube, you can watch the video and browse the content;
  • In-built QR code reader;
  • The support of 3D Touch App Shortcut;
  • Night Mode. You can change the browser’s color palette in one click;
  • Fast multi-file downloading;
  • Cloud sync features, and others.

UC+ Open Platform

Although the browser is the most important and a key component of the UC system, its ecosystem is on a stage of actively growing, and, as a result, there are a lot of other products. In July  2013, UCWeb, the company that operates behind UC Browser, announced the launch of UC+ Open Platform that combines several company products: WebApp store, an add-on platform, and an Application Bookmark Platform. This allows developers to use SDK to create programs that can be run in different scenarios. Users, on the other side, can install them from the in-built browser’s add-on panel. The examples of such applications are voice control, AR apps, and webpage translation.

The last component of UC+ Open Platform, Application Bookmark Platform, provides partner websites to put up a QR code that can be scanned by users. It automatically ads the webpage to the user’s bookmark list. There was one of the first and most innovative such platforms in China.

The Bottom Line

UC Browser is a web browser that is more common in Asian areas. The application is operated by the UCWeb company that is owned by Alibaba Group. It has a number of powerful and exciting features. First of all, it provides users with simultaneous downloads and data compression technology. Only imagine, the browser can save up to 60% of the data usage. It is due to the servers that compress and renders the data before sending the page to clients. Secondly, UC Browser has an in-built feature for adblocking and the opportunity to add and scan QR codes.
